District water resources are comprised of both surface and ground water. Surface waters include streams, lakes, ponds, and portions of the San Francisco Bay estuary. Groundwater consists of springs and wells that originate from water stored in underground aquifers. The potential beneficial uses of a water source are determined by water quality and quantity characteristics. Beneficial uses of water on District lands include recreation (fishing, swimming, boating), wildlife and fisheries habitat, livestock watering, drinking water, irrigation, and domestic use. The District monitors water quality to comply with water quality standards intended to protect public health.
