Park Activities

Hiking, Riding and Bicycle Trails

Visitors can explore miles of beautiful hiking, riding, and bicycling trails through grasslands, chaparral, and shady eucalyptus groves or along the shores of Lake Chabot. The East Bay Skyline National Trail, which traverses 31 miles of East Bay hills from Richmond to Castro Valley, runs the length of the park. Chabot is connected to Cull Canyon Regional Recreation Area by a six-mile section of the Chabot-to-Garin Regional Trail.

Anthony Chabot Campground

Overlooking Lake Chabot is Chabot Family Campground, a year-round getaway only minutes from the city (camping fee). The camp has 75 trailer, tent, or walk-in campsites, hot showers, Naturalist-led campfire programs, an amphitheater, and hiking/fishing access to Lake Chabot. There are reservable group campsites within the park as well. Marksmanship

The marksmanship range, operated by the Chabot Gun Club, is open to the public, including persons with disabilities. It has pistol, rifle, and shotgun ranges, and offers a hunter safety course. This is the only District facility where firearms are allowed. The facility is open Friday through Monday. The range is located in the park off Marciel Road; take the Marciel Gate entrance off Redwood Road.

Equestrian Center

Enjoy free barn tours, 1st & 3rd Sundays, April through October. 1 - 3 pm.
Please wear closed-toe shoes. Call to confirm.

Chabot Equestrian Center (510-569-4428) offers horse boarding. It does not offer guided trail rides at this time.

To Reach the Park

There are several access points to Anthony Chabot Regional Park on Redwood Road in Oakland. From I-580 westbound in Castro Valley, take the Castro Valley exit and turn left at Castro Valley Boulevard. At Redwood Road, turn right. (From I-580 eastbound, take the Redwood Road exit and turn left at Redwood.) After about two miles on Redwood you will first come to Willow Park Golf Course, then Lake Chabot's Proctor Staging Area, both on the left. Another few miles will bring you to Marciel Gate at Marciel Road. This is a hiking and equestrian staging area, and Marciel Road leads to a group camping area, the marksmanship range, and the Chabot Family Campground, which is also the home of evening campfire programs held in the summer; non-campers are welcome. Farther along Redwood Road you will find Bort Meadow Staging Area and group camp. After another few miles you will reach Redwood Regional Park's Redwood Gate on the right, just past Pinehurst Road. Anthony Chabot's MacDonald and Big Bear Staging Areas are farther along Redwood Road on the left. Finally, the Skyline Ranch Equestrian Facility (510-336-0850) will be on the left just before Redwood's intersection with Skyline Boulevard in Oakland.

To reach Clyde Woolridge staging area, take Hwy 24 west to Oakland. Take Hwy 13 South to Hayward. Merge onto Hwy 580 West. Take the Keller Ave exit towards Mountain Blvd. Turn left on Keller Ave, then right on Skyline Blvd. The staging area is on the left near the intersection of Skyline Blvd and Grass Valley Road.

Trail access to Anthony Chabot is also possible via hiking trails originating on the northeast side of Lake Chabot Marina area. In Castro Valley on I-580 westbound, take the Strobridge Avenue exit. Turn right on Strobridge, right on Castro Valley Boulevard, and left on Lake Chabot Road. The Lake Chabot Marina is about two miles ahead on the right. In Castro Valley on I-580 eastbound, exit at Redwood Road and go left, go left at Castro Valley Boulevard, right at Lake Chabot Road, and follow the directions above. From I-580 in San Leandro, exit at Fairmont Drive and go east (uphill). The Lake entrance will be to the left at the bottom of the hill. (parking fee).

To reach the Chabot Equestrian Center (510-569-4428), take the Keller Avenue exit off I-580 in Oakland and proceed uphill. Turn left at Skyline Boulevard. The equestrian facility will be just ahead on the right.
