Bay Trail Anniversary Celebration Scheduled for
June 6, 2009 at Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center

The East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD), Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) as part of the Hayward Area Shoreline Planning Agency (HASPA) will host a celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the San Francisco Bay Trail. The celebration will take place on Saturday, June 6 at 1:30 pm at the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center at 4901 Breakwater Avenue in Hayward.

Additional HASPA Member Agencies include the City of Hayward and Alameda County. At the event, The Honorable Bill Lockyer, California State Treasurer, will be the special guest.  Lockyer was instrumental in the founding of the San Francisco Bay Trail. He authored Senate Bill 100 (SB 100) when he was a State senator to create a “Ring Around the Bay” recreation corridor.  The Honorable Johan Klehs, former member of the State Assembly will show a video presentation for the Treasurer at the June 6 celebration.

When completed, the San Francisco Bay Trail will be a continuous 500-mile network of bicycling and hiking trails connecting the shoreline of all nine Bay Area counties and linking 47 cities. To date more than half of the Bay Trail’s ultimate alignment – approximately 293 miles – has been completed.  A major section of the trail runs through the HASPA area.

HASPA was formed in 1971 as a unique joint power agency charged with guiding land use plans to protect the shoreline.  HASPA’s influence in providing access to the Hayward shoreline continues to play a crucial role in the completion of the Bay Trail.
